Alī Ādil Shāh I‘s Nujūm al-ʿulūm: An encyclopedia of the mystical sciences
of the 16th-century Deccan Plateau

The Nujūm al-ʿulūm (Stars of Science), a book authored by Deccan King Alī Ādil Šāh I (who ruled from 1558–1579), is a florilegium, an illustrated manual of astrology, zoology, the science of the omen and other areas of knowledge.

Tonight’s lecture places the encyclopedia in the context of intellectual history in early modern South Asia, but also in relation to the reclassification of science in the Persian-speaking and East Islamic world following the Timurid era.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Alberto Tiburcio (LMU) as part of the series Foundations of Islam: Books, organized by the Munich Middle Eastern-Mediterranean-Central Asian Center (4MZ).

The event will be held in German. You can find more information on the 4MZ website.
