In 1947, Henri Matisse created the illustrated book Jazz containing works that would become some of the most frequently depicted art motifs of the 20th century. Yet despite its popularity, the book was seldom exhibited. To this day, it has not been fully edited and is scarcely researched. The Franz Marc Museum is in possession of the signed copy of the book that is now on display at the CAS. This exhibition also asks the question: What did the title – Jazz – mean to Matisse? The question is a poignant one: Though colorfully connoting the artist’s Southern French joie de vivre, it was produced during the occupation, during one of the darkest phases of his life.

Jazz was created by Henri Matisse (1869–1954) in 1947 at the behest of the Tériade publishing house. It is an illustrated book comprising twenty plates based on cut-outs and accompanied by texts.
