The publishers of two of the leading rankings of the world’s academic institutions have released their latest findings. As in last editions of these tables, LMU has again done very well.
In the Nature Index 2019, which is based on the publication records of universities and research organizations in a selection of the most respected scientific journals, LMU is ranked 45th. This confirms LMU’s standing as Germany’s best placed university, and the only one to break into the top 50, in this list. In comparison with its European peers, LMU occupies a very respectable 7th spot in a table that is led by Cambridge University, the ETH in Zürich and the University of Oxford. The undisputed global leaders are once again lead by North American institutions, with Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), respectively, taking the first three places.
The QS World University Ranking 2020 assigns 63rd place to LMU. Here again, the leading group is made up of MIT, Stanford and Harvard – in that order. On this list, LMU is one of only three German universities in the top 100 – together with the Technical University of Munich (55) and Heidelberg University (66).
