At its meeting today, the University Council elected Matthias Tschöp as the new President of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). Matthias Tschöp is currently CEO and Scientific Director of Helmholtz Zentrum München and is chair of the Department of Metabolic Diseases at the Technical University of Munich.
In October 2025, Matthias Tschöp will succeed Bernd Huber, who has been President of LMU since 2002. During Huber’s 23-year tenure, LMU has developed into a leading university both nationally and internationally.
“With the election of Matthias Tschöp, the University Council has succeeded in recruiting an experienced and internationally renowned academic who promises to lead LMU successfully and with a pioneering vision in the coming years. We are very much looking forward to working with him,” comment Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Chairman of the University Council, and Armin Nassehi, Chairman of the Board of University Representatives and Deputy Chairman of the University Council.
The University Council consists of 10 external members and 10 members of the Academic Senate. Matthias Tschöp’s six-year term in office begins on October 1, 2025.
“I sincerely congratulate Matthias Tschöp on his election as the new President of LMU and wish him every success. During my remaining term in office, I will involve him in all decisions and processes to ensure a smooth transition,” says Bernd Huber, President of LMU Munich.
Bavaria’s Science Minister, Markus Blume, says: “Matthias Tschöp is the ideal person for the role of LMU President – he combines visionary leadership skills with strong research credentials. As an internationally leading scientist in his discipline and an experienced and successful science manager, he has all skills to lead this excellent university successfully into the future after the Huber era. He has a clear vision – and at the same time a sense of LMU’s history and tradition. I am convinced that he is the right man at the right time. Congratulations!”
LMU’s President-designate, Prof. Matthias Tschöp, says: “I am delighted with the University Council’s decision. As President of LMU, I will work together with all my colleagues and invest all my energy to ensure a successful future for this unique, world-class university and all its students.”
