Why the gender wage gap exists

“Not all women earn less than men, but on average we see wage differentials. This is what we refer to as the gender wage gap. According to the latest calculations in Germany, this gap was 18 percent for the hourly wage,” says Katrin Auspurg. Among other research interests, the Professor of Sociology studies gender inequalities in the job market. In our video, she explains the reasons behind unequal pay and pinpoints approaches for fixing the problem: “A key component would be to share care responsibilities more evenly between women and men. Because the gender wage gap has a great deal to do with inequalities in private households.”
