Pre-registration
For some degree programs it is necessary to undergo a pre-registration procedure before registering. This must be completed in the form — and within the deadlines — stipulated.
The procedure is conducted by the institution (institute, department, faculty) responsible for the subject you have chosen.
A pre-registration requires you to register in advance within the deadlines specified via the relevant institution's online portal.
Whether you degree program requires you to do this, is specified in the general information concerning the degree program itself. Specifi details regarding the procedure itself — including links to further sources of information (such as appointments and documents to be submitted — can be found on the relevant institution's website.
Pre-registration procedures do not replace the standard registration process. If anything, they are deemed a prerequisite for registration onto certain programs. When it comes to registration (or changing subjects), you should prove that you have successfully undergone the pre-registration procedure by submitting a certificate of completion for the degree program in question.
Major and minor subjects
If your degree program consists of a combination of several subjects (e.g. major and minor subject; information on this can be found in our degree program section), it is essential that you also visit the study page of the desired additional subject and click on "study place" there as well. Different subjects sometimes have different application and admission procedures.
Where and how do you get your study place?
Be sure to inform yourself of the aptitude procedures via the institution repsonsible for your desired degree program. You should then be sure to take part in all the necessary steps in the form — and within the deadlines — specified (see above).
Please also be sure to read the following information through very carefully. Choose the category that applies to you in order to acquire more details about the next steps that follow:
German citizens (even if they have dual citizenship!) should always choose the category "Germans and Bildungsinländer," even if they received their university entrance qualification abroad (also International Baccalaureate).
Foreign citizens, please choose the category "Germans and Bildungsinländer" if you received your university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad. The same applies if — after receiving a degree from a German university or university of applied sciences with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters (bachelor's degree, state examination) — you would like to continue your studies in the same field at LMU (master's degree) or begin a new undergraduate program.
Please note: Foreign citizens who, after receiving their university entrance qualification abroad, have successfully completed a degree program at a German university or university of applied sciences with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters are Bildungsinländer.

Citizens of the EU member states (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic) or the EEA member states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) please choose the category "EU/EEA citizens."
This also applies in the case of dual citizenship with a non-EU/EEA member state and also if, after receiving a degree from a German university or university of applied sciences with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters (bachelor's degree, state examination), you would like to continue your studies in the same field at LMU (master's degree) or begin a new undergraduate program.
All other foreign citizens please select the category "non-EU citizens." This category also applies for candidates who received their university entrance qualification abroad and received a degree from a German university or university of applied sciences with a standard period of study of less than 6 semesters and wish to begin a new undergraduate program (that does not build upon their existing third level qualifications) at LMU.
