Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is a leading research university in Europe and located in the heart of the city of Munich (Bavaria). 52.972 students were enrolled at LMU In the winter semester 2023/24 and 835 professors and lectures were researching and teaching at LMU and the University Hospital in 2023. LMU Munich is a lively center of research on Eastern Europe: the Department of Eastern and South East European History, with four full professorships, numerous postdoc researchers, Ph.D. students, and visiting lecturers, makes an important contribution to research and teaching on the turbulent past of the regions of Eastern and South Eastern Europe. In 2025, LMU will fill a professorship for the history of Ukraine and Eastern Central Europe in the pre-modern era.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, or BMBF for short, is a cabinet-level ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Among other things, it is responsible for funding research projects and institutions. In order to strengthen the German-Ukrainian research partnership, four German-Ukrainian Cores of Excellence have been selected for funding. The aim is to establish leading research groups and to create long-term centers of academic excellence in Ukraine, which at the same time form important bilateral cooperation bridges and promote “brain circulation” between the two countries. The Mykola Haievoi Center for Modern History is the only core of excellence in the humanities of the four selected.
